Jeff Hill, Shiyi Zan Named A-10 Cross Country Co-Rookies Of The Week
Sept. 17, 2007
AMHERST, Mass. - UMass freshman Jeffery Hill (Blackstone, Mass) and redshirt freshman Shiyi Zan (Ottawa, Ontario) were named Atlantic 10 Co-Rookies of the Week after leading the UMass men's cross country team to a first place finish and the women's cross country team to a second place finish, respectively, on Saturday. In its only home meet of the season the men's cross country team defeated Maine, Connecticut, Colgate, and Vermont. The women's squad finished behind Maine and in front of Vermont in a close race.
Hill showed no nerves in his first meet collegiate meet as he was the first Umass runner to cross the finish line, completing the race in an impressive time of 25:01. Hill is following up an impressive high school career where he was a three time All District runner and the District champion his senior year.
On the women's side Zan's fourth place finish helped UMass secure second place as a team. Zan completed the race in a time of 18:18, the second best time on the team. Zan is coming off of a strong performance last week where she finished sixth in the 5k run with a time of 21:08.50. Zan had an impressive indoor track campaign last year but redshirted the cross country and outdoor track seasons.
The honor was the first for both runners.
Both the men's and women's teams will travel to Lehigh University for the Paul Short Invitational on September 28th.
