AMHERST, Mass. - On Saturday, September 14 the UMass Women's Cross Country team will begin its season from the comforts of their own home in the Minuteman Invitational. The Minutewomen will play host to Maine, Vermont, and Amherst College as well as northeast powerhouses UConn and #25 Boston College.

Running with one of the youngest rosters in the conference in 2012, UMass returns one of the most talented groups that Head Coach Julie LaFreniere has had since 2009 when the team finished third overall in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

With the exception of Sarah Barrett, all of the Minutewomen's top runners were sophomores and freshmen. To add to the team's top returners, UMass gains Alexandra Purdue-Smithe and Mary Cole who are two upperclassmen coming back from an injury plagued 2012 campaign.

Coach LaFreniere also managed to bring in a freshman class ready to make an impact right away. The class of 2017 has been described as having "untapped potential" by the head coach, and she feels that this class will give UMass the boost it needs to compete alongside some of the best teams in the country.

Together this year's freshman class includes a Division II Western Massachusetts Champion and fifth place finisher in Division II State Championship as well as a runner-up in the Division I Massachusetts All-State Championship.

The Minutewomen will also run on a new and improved course on Saturday. The UMass Amherst Agricultural Learning Center and Renaissance Center, according to Coaches Ken O'Brien and Julie LaFreniere have displayed "outstanding cooperation" with the teams in order to preserve a "spectacular course in recent years and make it even better."

UMass is a proud owner of one of the finest cross country courses in the country. Traditionally it has been known for how spectator friendly it is, now with the cooperation of the UMass Amherst Agricultural Learning Center and Renaissance Center the course is in prime condition for competition.
