Bronx, N.Y. - The UMass men's cross country team ranked seventh, while the women's team took 22nd at the NCAA Regional Qualifier in Bronx, N.Y. this Saturday. Senior leader Nils Fischer (Stow, Mass.) led the way for the Minutemen, finishing 29th overall, while redshirt sophomore Shiyi Zan took 18th overall for the women. Both the men and women continued to improve on their finish from last year, with the Minutemen jumping four places, while the Minutewomen leaped six.

Zan crossed the 6K finish line in 22:07.9, finishing before the next Minutewoman by over a minute. Freshman Karen Roa (Jamaica, N.Y.) finished next, ranking 94th with a time of 23:35.3. Rounding out the scoring for the Minutewomen were freshman Claire Pettit (Warwick, N.Y.), sophomore Kristen Darling (Miller Place, N.Y.), and senior Taryn Trapp (Nampa, Idaho). Pettit finished 118th with a time of 24:01.6. With a time of 24:48.1, Darling finished 118th, 78 spots higher than last season. Trapp crossed just behind, with a time of 24:41.6 and a mark of 175. Providence finished first in the Northeast Region with a score of 36 points.

Finishing first for the Minutemen once again, Fischer crossed the 10K finish line in 32:52.4. Jonathan Pierce (Hanover, Mass.), who led the Minutemen to their second-ever Atlantic 10 title two weekends ago, placed two spots behind, with a time of 32:54.7. After a substantial gap, senior Jesse Regnier (Hampden, Mass.) ran the 10K in 33:18.7 for a 51st place finish. Next was Academic All-Conference team's Kevin Johnson with a time of 33:23.9 for a 57th place finish. Junior Andrew Mulvaney (South Hadley, Mass.) rounded out the scoring, crossing 70th with a time of 33:45.3. Iona ranked first overall, with a total score of 46 points.
