Minutewomen Fight For Fifth Place Finish At A-10's

RICHMOND, Va. - The Minutewomen placed fifth overall with 152 points at the 2013 Cross Country Atlantic 10 Championship on Saturday morning in Richmond Va. Rachel Hilliard once again led the way, and has now led the team in five of the six races she has competed in. UMass fell just short of Saint Louis, La Salle, Richmond and this year's Atlantic 10 Champion, Duquesne.
Hilliard crossed the finish line at 17-minutes, 48.7-seconds for a 19th place finish out of 111 runners, just four spots short of achieving All-Conference honors. The junior was closely followed by the freshman standout Christine Davis who is coming off a week in which she was awarded UMass Athlete of the Week and Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week. Davis finished 22nd overall with a time of 17-minutes, 58.1-seconds.
In 31st place and finishing third on the team was Alexandra Purdue-Smithe. The redshirt junior ran the 5k in 18-minutes, 5.5-seconds and was closely followed by Katie Powers in 35th place. Powers was the fourth UMass harrier to cross the finish line, doing so in 18-minutes, 10.7-seconds.
Finishing back-to-back was Sarah Barrett and Carly Zinner. Barrett ran the course in 18-minutes, 34-seconds while Zinner was just .1-seconds behind at 18-minutes, 34.1-seconds. The pair finished 53rd and 54th respectively. The final runner for UMass in the top seven was sophomore Molly McMahon in 72nd place. McMahon finished the championship meet in 19-minutes, 1.1-seconds.
In two weeks on November 15 the Minutemen will head to Bronx, N.Y. for the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship. Their race begins at 1:00 p.m.
