Cross Country Races At The Atlantic 10 Championships

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - La Salle's men's cross country team placed six runners in the top 10 while the women's sqaud finished four in the top 10 as both teams repeated as Atlantic 10 champions Saturday at the 2002 Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championships hosted by Duquesne University at Schenley Park. The Massachusetts men's team finished sixth, while the women placed eighth.

Senior Dave Hantman (Cambridge, Mass.) led the Minutemen with a 25th-place finish, completing the course in 26:25. Senior Ed Breen (Stoneham, Mass.) placed 28th with a time of 26:28. Sophomore Andrew McCarron (Lunenburg, Mass.) and senior Colin Baughman (Sherrill, N.Y.) were the next two runners to finish, registering times of 26:32 and 26:38, respectively.

On the women's side, senior Julie McGee (Needham, Mass.) led the squad with a 27th-place finish as she completed the course in 18:50. Sophomore Alexis Anzelone (Westfield, N.J.) ran the race in 19:07, good for 34th place, while junior Katie Knowles (Ludlow, Mass.) was 41st with a time of 19:13.

La Salle's Todd Witzleben finished first overall on the men's side with a time of 25:22 for his second consecutive individual title and Most Outstanding Award. La Salle junior Sheila Klick was named the Most Outstanding Performer on the women's side after winning the race in a time of 17:39.

Saint Joseph's freshman Andre LaBoy placed third overall (25:23) and was named Most Outstanding Rookie. Rhode Island freshman Kristen Coon finished fifth overall with a time of 17:58 and received Most Outstanding Rookie accolades on the women's side. La Salle men's and women's Head Coach Charles Torpey was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the second straight season.

Saint Joseph's, Duquesne, Dayton and George Washington rounded out the top five on men's side, while Richmond, Rhode Island, Saint Joseph's and Duquesne rounded out the women's top five.

Both UMass teams have now completed their 2002 seasons.
