Cross Country Races at Atlantic 10 Championship

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Massachusetts men's cross country team placed third and the women's cross country team placed fourth at the 2001 Atlantic 10 Championship ran this afternoon at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia.
Leading the way for the Minutemen was senior Michael Pieck (Guilderland, N.Y.) who finished ninth with a time of 25:34. Seniors Kevin Curtain (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Ryan Corbett (Highland, N.Y.) finished 12th (25:44) and 14th (25:51) respectively. Also finishing in the top 25 for UMass were seniors Colin Baughman (Sherrill, N.Y.) and Salvatore Nastasi (Merrich, N.Y.) who placed 23rd and 24th.
La Salle captured the A-10 men's title with a team score of 16. Last year's champion, St. Joseph's, finished in second with a score of 52. The Minutemen recorded 80 points in third place followed by Duquesne (99), Geroge Washington (174), Fordham (175), Dayton (191), Richmond (224), Rhode Island (244), Xavier (257) and St. Bonaventure (365).
The women's team was paced by senior Kristin Cisowski (Salem, N.H.) who finished third with a time of 18:13. Senior Sarah Thoms (Gloucester, Mass.) was next for the Minutewomen in 23rd place with a time of 19:11. Senior Rebecca Aldrich (Winchester, Mass.) was the only other UMass runner in the top 25, finishing 25th in a time of 19:16.
La Salle captured its first-ever A-10 women's cross country title with a team score of 55. Rhode Island (65) and Richmond (72) finished second and third, followed by UMass (122), St. Joseph's (125), Dayton (129), Xavier (130), Duquesne (182), Fordham (260), George Washington (290) and St. Bonaventure (365).
