AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts men's cross country team placed fifth in a 22-team field at the 36th annual Albany (N.Y.) Invitational, while the UMass women's cross country team finished 11th in the 19-team race.

Marist won the men's race with 82 points, followed by Colgate (83), Lehigh (94), host Albany (94) and the Minutemen's 103 points. Syracuse's John Bitok won the race with a time of 25:05.79.

UMass' top finisher was senior Dave Hantman (Cambridge, Mass.), who covered the 8,000-meter course in 26:27.42 to finish 13th overall. Sophomore Andy McCarron (Lunenburg, Mass.) was 18th with a time of 26:34.74, while senior Colin Baughman (Sherrill, N.Y.) was 19th in 26:35.10.

Defending NCAA Division III national champion Middlebury College won the women's race with 18 points, followed by host Albany (103), Syracuse (132), Lehigh (134) and Northeastern (162) to round out the the standings. The Minutewomen tallied 263 points to finish 11th.

Senior Julie McGee (Needham, Mass.) led the Minutwomen with a 31st-place finish, as she covered the 5,000-meter course in 19:34.52. Junior Tricia Silva (Amesbury, Mass.) placed 42nd in 19:44.22. Middlebury's Michcia Adrian won the women's race in 18:09.12, just ahead of teammate Jessica Manzer's 18:09.88.

The UMass men's and women's cross country teams return to action Saturday, Nov. 2, at the 2002 Atlantic 10 Championships, to be run in Pittsburgh, Pa.
