Women's Cross Enjoys Successful Trip In Bethlehem

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Even with the absence of Natalie Mako, Emily Ruggiero and Heather MacLean the Minutewomen leave Bethlehem, Pa. with a lot of good signs going into the upcoming weeks of the season. UMass placed 36th overall in the Paul Short Invitational that included 48 teams, tallying 928 points. However the team didn't let its overall finish affect their outlook on the future, focusing on what really matters, realizing that the regular season is about improvement and learning so they are all ready for the conference championship in November.

Rachel Hilliard wasn't far from home on Saturday afternoon when she averaged a 5-minute, 48-second mile leading the way for UMass in the third time in as many meets this season. The junior harrier completed the course in 21-minutes, 40-seconds for an 84th place finish overall in a field of 406 runners.

After Hilliard a pack of three Minutewomen finished together with Alexandra Purdue-Smithe in front, clocking in at 22-minutes, 29-seconds at a 6-minute, 1-second mile pace for a 181st place finish. Stepping up for her team hindered by injury this week and finishing just 7-seconds behind Purdue-Smithe was fellow junior Katie Powers at 22-minutes, 36-seconds. Powers was 198th overall averaging a 6-minute, 3-second mile.

In 207th and fourth for the Minutewomen was Christine Davis. The freshman challenged herself, starting off the meet running with last year's national championship runner-up Abbey D'Agostino from Dartmouth College. Davis then finished the race at a 6-minute, 6-second pace for a final time of 22-minutes, 44-seconds. Also showing improvement and rounding out the scoring five was Sarah Barrett in 258th place. The senior crossed the finish line at 23-minutes, 10-seconds and with an average mile time of 6-minutes, 13-seconds.



Next week the Minutewomen will travel back to Boston in for the New England Championship in Franklin Park. The regional championship is set for October 12 with the women racing at 11:00 A.M.
