Freshmen Live Up To The Hype In Season Opener

AMHERST, Mass. - It was Rachel Hilliard who led the Minutewomen in their fourth place performance on Saturday. UMass finished behind #25 Boston College, previously ranked UConn and Vermont with four of its top seven finishing in the top 20 runners, tallying a total of 81 points. Three of UMass' top five runners were Coach LaFreniere's highly praised freshmen. #25 Boston College won the meet with ease scoring 21 points and placing runners first, second, fourth, fifth and ninth with UConn trailing with 55 points.
Hilliard finished 12th overall, completing the course in 17-minutes, 56.50-seconds. She was closely followed by the freshman duo of Natalie Mako and Christine Davis. Mako, made her collegiate debut today not far from her hometown of South Deerfield, Mass. She finished second on the team and 14th overall at 18-minutes, 1.36-seconds. Trailing her was the other highly touted freshman, Davis, crossing the finish line 16th overall at 18-minutes, 5.19-seconds.
Finishing the race fourth for the Minutewomen and 18th in the competition was Co-Captain Alexandra Purdue-Smithe. The redshirt junior out of Sharon, Massachusetts completed the race with a time of 18-minutes, 16.38-seconds. The third freshman was Heather MacLean in fifth place and 23rd overall. MacLean completed the race in 18-minutes, 31.46-seconds.
The next meet UMass will compete in will be their toughest test of the season. UMass will travel to the bayside to compete against #1 Providence, #3 Oregon, #10 Cornell, and #25 Boston College. The Boston College Invite is set for Friday September 27 at 3:00 P.M.
