Minutewomen Off To A Strong Start In 2012 Cross Country Debut
Amherst, Mass. - Led by sophomore Rachel Hilliard (Hookstown, Pa.), the Minutewomen finished together as a team to hold off Maine's fourth runner to claim the victory in the 2012 season opener. Hilliard finished second overall and crossed the finish line with a time of 19:52.18. Trailing Maine's Annabelle Wilson was the freshman Carly Zinner. Zinner finished fourth overall at 20:01.77. Immediately following the Sussex, New Jersey native was the senior co-captain, Danielle McNiff (Hingham, Mass.) at 20:09.79. Carolyn Stocker placed third for Maine and sixth overall and not far behind was the rest of the UMass team lead by Sarah Barrett (Topsfield, Mass.) and freshman Elizabeth Blanchard. The rest of the Minutewomen finished seventh through twelfth in order to hold off Maine and claim their 26-33 victory. Barrett placed fourth for the Minutewomen with a time of 20:11.02 while Blanchard was by her side at 20:27.38.
After the win on the opening week of the 2012 cross country season, UMass will compete again at home next week and play host to five teams including Amherst College and Boston College. The women's race will start at 12:00 p.m. following the men's start time of 11:30 a.m. at Wysocki Fields on September, 15.
