Volleyball Returns Home To Face Second Place Rhode Island

Oct. 28, 1999

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts volleyball team returns home this weekend to face Rhode Island on October 30 at 7p.m. in the Curry Hicks Cage. The Minutewomen are currently 11 10 overall and 5-6 in the Atlantic 10 and are ranked ninth in the regional poll. As part of the event, a halloween costume contest will take place with the winner receiving a free round trip airline ticket to anywhere in the continental United States.

The Minutewomen fell 3-2 in their previous meeting against the Rams on Sept. 25 at Rhode Island. Rhode Island is 16-6 overall and second in the conference at 8-3. Christie Wilson leads the squad in kills with 5.41 a game along with Amy Knebel who tops the team in digs with 3.09 a game.

“We had tough practices this week preparing for Rhode Island’s strong outside hitters,” said UMass junior Jennifer Drennan (Long Beach, Calif.). “We put ourselves in a tough spot after last weekend, but if we can come together and just play without worrying too much about what Rhode Island does we will be more successful.”

Senior Jill Meyers (Huntington Beach, Calif.), featured in this month’s Glamour Magazine, continues to lead the team in kills with 4.46 per game, while ranking second in digs with 3.41 per game. She only needs eight more solo blocks to move into second on UMass’ all-time solo blocks list.

Senior Kari Hogancamp (Huntington Beach, Calif.) continues to lead the team as well as the nation in digs with 5.18 per game. This is the fifth week in a row that Hogancamp has led the nation in digs. She has also posted double-doubles in 16 of the 21 matches the Minutewomen have played this season.

Junior Rebecca Hasson (Riverside, Calif.) leads the team at the net with 1.14 blocks per game. Hasson is third on the team in kills with 3.03 per game and only needs five more solo blocks to move into fourth place on the school’s all-time solo blocks list.
