W. Track - 10/8/2009 FEATURE: Fastest Woman in Amherst?Cross-country team captain Shiyi Zan '11 was born in Beijing, moved to Japan at age 4, and then to Canada at 8. A red-shirt junior, she's a kinesiology major with close-to-perfect grades and plans for a medical career. Zan finished first for the Minutewomen in every meet last fall. Her coach, Julie LaFreniere '77, describes her as "a pretty intense individual who strives for perfection athletically and academically." MORE W. Track - 8/31/2009 Jackson Named Track & Field Assistant CoachFormer University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill assistant coach David Jackson has been named an assistant coach for the UMass track and field programs, it was announced today. Jackson spent the last two years working with the Tar Heels' sprinters, women's pole vault and multi-event athletes, including three All-Americans and four ACC champions. MORE W. Track - 5/29/2009 Duo Competes At NCAA RegionalTwo members of the UMass women's track and field team were in action on Friday, representing the Minutewomen at the NCAA East Regional on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University. The Minutewomen accumulated five points, while the Minutemen did not score. The top performance of the day, and all five points, came from redshirt senior Kristen Bakanowski (Northboro, Mass.), who tied her own school record with a pole vault of 12-07.50, ranking fourth at the meet.
