July 5, 2014
EUGENE, Ore. - UMass women's track and field rising sophomore Heather MacLean has advanced to the final of the 800 meter run at the USA Track & Field Junior Outdoor Championships after competing on Saturday evening at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
MacLean, a native of Peabody, Mass., finished first in her heat and logged the second-fastest time in the preliminaries overall with a time of 2-minutes, 7.21-seconds, to qualify for Sunday's 4:35 PT (7:35 ET) final. The performance by MacLean broke her own UMass record of 2-minutes, 7.41-seconds, set at the 2014 New England Outdoor Championship where she repeated as champion in the event after capturing a New England title indoors, as well.
A highly successful freshman campaign for MacLean also included an Atlantic 10 outdoor title in the 800m and a share of the A-10 4x800 meter relay gold to earn her Women's Most Outstanding Rookie Performer honors at the meet.
The 2014 USATF Junior Outdoor Championships features many of the nation's best athletes under the age of 20, including high school standouts and the nation's most promising college freshmen. The meet serves as a qualifier for the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships, which will be held in Eugene, Ore., from July 22-27.
