June 1, 2012
AMHERST, Mass. - UMass seniors Claire Pettit and Daniel Wu have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District Track and Field/Cross Country teams, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday. Both are now eligible to earn for Academic All-America honors.
The recognition is Wu's second of his career as he was also tabbed academic all-district as a junior in 2010-11. Recently selected to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference squad for the third time in his career, the Finance major graduated from the UMass Honors College with a 3.856 and minored in Chinese.
This winter, Wu placed seventh in the triple jump and scored at the A-10 Championships by hitting a mark of 44-6.75. The senior was the Minutemen's most versatile jumper all indoor season, competing in the long, high, and triple jump events. He also holds the fifth best mark in UMass history in the indoor long jump (23-5.50).
Outdoors, Wu broke what was the school long jump record this season, leaping a distance of 24-00.25 at the UNH Pre-Conference Meet. He now sits at second best in UMass history in the long jump behind classmate, Zach Koncki. Wu placed seventh in the long jump at the 2012 Outdoor A-10 Championships with a mark of 22-11.75. He was also the team's best competitor in the triple jump this year. His best leap came at the 2012 Outdoor A-10 Championships when he set a mark of 44-11.75, placing 11th overall.
Pettit, who graduated with a 3.90 GPA as an Anthropology major with a minor in Psychology, enjoyed a highly successful senior campaign as a member of the Minutwomen's 4x800 meter relay squad. She was a part of the 2012 New England Champion outdoor 4x800 team that posted a time of 9:00.01. Pettit helped set the top two outdoor 4x800 relay times in UMass history, including a school record of 8:54.72 and also ends her career with the Minutewomen holding a share of the No. 3 indoor 4x800 mark (9:14.71) and the No. 2 time in the distance medley relay (11:49.64).
