April 18, 2012
AMHERST, Mass. - Tim McCormack of the men's lacrosse team and Nalis Mbianda of the women's track and field team were named Co-Athletes of the Week on Tuesday. They will be honored at the weekly UMass Sports Luncheon on Wednesday which starts at Noon in Room 1009 of the Campus Center.
McCormack, logged CAA Player of the Week honors after helping the Minutemen remain undefeated (11-0) and earn the program's first-ever national No. 1 ranking. The senior recorded 14 saves in his 11th win of the season -- 8-6 over Drexel. The Long Beach, N.Y., native made nine saves in the second half, stopping all five of the Dragons' shots on goal in the third. The third-quarter shutout allowed UMass to take a 4-3 lead into the fourth quarter.
Mbianda, a junior, helped contribute to the successful second place finish at the Minutewomen's home meet on April 14. The Newton, Mass. native earned a first place finish in the shot put event, throwing a distance of 46-6.25. This mark surpasses her previously set second best all-time distance of 45-03.75 in the UMass record book. The Minutewomen will compete again Saturday at the Holy Cross Invitational in Worcester, Mass.
The Weekly Sports Luncheon features an all-you-can eat salad to dessert buffet for just $11 along with speakers from the athletic department.
