Minutwomen To Compete On Home Grounds Saturday In The UMass Invitational

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass Invitational marks the first home meet of 2012 and it will be the last time the Minutewomen will compete from the comfort of their home turf until the Atlantic 10 Championships. Ceremonies honoring the senior athletes will begin at 10:30 am with competition at the UMass Track and Field Complex beginning at 11:30 am on Saturday. April 14 also marks senior day for the track and field squad. Karen Roa, Chrissy Silvar, Deanna Julian, Jennifer Simao and Claire Pettit will be honored for all their success to this point in their collegiate careers. The event will be televised on Wednesday, April 18 at 8:00 pm on CBS 3. The Minutewomen will try to build on a successful outdoor season opener at the AIC Invitational where six New England qualifiers, five first place finishes, and 33 top eight performances propelled UMass to a first place finish with 175.50 points. First place finishes came from Nalis Mbianda, Rachelle Bourque, Chrissy Silvar, Karen Roa, and Deanna Julian.
Last year at the UMass Track and Field Complex home opener Roa, Mbianda, and Bourque all gave strong performances in their respective events. Mbianda placed first in the shot put, hitting a mark of 42-05.50 with Bourque placing a close second with a distance of 39-07.25. Bourque also placed second in the javelin when she threw a distance of 119-03.00. Roa placed second in the 5000 meter run, running a time of 17:38.18. Rebecca Stoyle will be competing in the triple jump. The freshman out of Pembroke, Mass. had a solid start to her freshman campaign placing the fourth best mark in school history for the triple jump. As always Chrissy Silvar will compete in the pole vault, Nalis Mbianda with compete in her shot put, and Rachelle Bourque will compete in the Javelin. On Saturday Deanna Julian will get her first shot at the 1,500 meter run. The senior usually runs the 800 meter run. Karen Roa will compete in the Steeplechase. She holds the UMass school record in the event and was also a NCAA Regional Qualifier and New England Champion in 2011. Rebecca Stoyle will be competing in the triple jump.
