March 31, 2014
AMHERST, Mass. - Following her standout performance at the University of North Florida Spring Break Invitational Becky Stoyle has been named this week's UMass Athlete of the Week honoree. Stoyle will be honored this Wednesday at 12:00 PM in the Massachusetts Room of the Mullins Center along with this year's Winter Scholar Athletes Michaela Butler of swimming and diving and Oleg Yevenko of ice hockey.
In women's track and field's season opener in Jacksonville, Fla., Stoyle came away with the Minutewomen's best performance. The junior hailing from Pembroke, Mass. was the best of 25 competitors in the triple jump and the sixth best out of 37 in the long jump.
Stoyle's triple jump mark of 40-feet, 11-inches qualified her for the New England Championship as well as the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship later this season. The mark was a full 1-foot, 10-inches ahead of the opposition. With a jump totaling 18-feet, 1.5-inches the junior qualified for the New England Championship in the long jump as well.
Team points were not scored in the meet. However, the Minutewomen faced off against competition from 13 other schools including Michigan, North Florida, Georgia Southern and Charleston Southern. Stoyle and the women's track and field program will venture to Storrs, Conn. on April 5 for the UConn Invitational.
The buffet luncheon is held from noon to 1:15 PM with a cost of $13 per person. The program will begin at 12:15 PM and free parking will be available at the rear of the Mullins Center.
