Feb. 3, 2014

AMHERST, Mass. - On Monday afternoon the UMass Sports Luncheon Committee announced that track and field's Becky Stoyle and swimming and diving's Michaela Butler will be honored at Wednesday's weekly UMass Sports Luncheon as UMass Co-Athletes of the Week. The speakers for this week's luncheon are Women's Lacrosse Coach Angela McMahon and Women's Track and Field Coach Julie LaFreniere.

Stoyle won the triple jump in record-breaking fashion on Saturday at the Harvard Invitational. The junior leaped 41-feet, 4.5-inches eclipsing the previous UMass indoor record by 3.5-inches. The distance ranks her 23rd in the country, just five spots away from qualifying for the NCAA Championship and solidifies her atop the Atlantic 10 Conference by a full 10.5-inches.

The junior hailing from Pembroke Mass. then leaped the best distance in the long jump in a field of 24 competitors with a mark equaling 18-feet, 3.25-inches. The jump places her third in the Atlantic 10 Conference. She also finished second on the track outpacing 20 sprinters in the 300 meter dash with a time of 40.52-seconds.

Butler completed an impressive third undefeated regular season with runaway wins in the 1- and 3-meter springboard diving events. The pair of first place performances led to a UMass to a win over Fordham in the final home meet of the season. The senior enters the Atlantic 10 Championship looking to grab her third consecutive gold medal in both diving events.

At Wednesday's luncheon Coach McMahon will preview the upcoming women's lacrosse season as her team looks to seize its league record sixth consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship title. Coach LaFreniere will recap what her team has accomplished so far this indoor season and will give her thoughts on what's ahead for the Minutewomen with the Atlantic 10 Championship just around the corner.

The buffet luncheon is held from noon to 1:15 p.m. with a cost of $13 per person. The program beginning at 12:15 p.m. will be held in the Massachusetts Room (third floor) of the Mullins Center with free parking available at the rear of the building.

If the University of Massachusetts announces a delayed opening or closes for the day the UMass Sports Luncheon will be cancelled. You may check the UMass.edu website's notification or call the UMass Emergency Closing Hotline at 413-545-3630 for a voice recording indicating the status of the campus.
