Jan. 28, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass Sports Luncheon Committee has selected UMass Track and Field standouts Becky Stoyle and Michael Cyphers as UMass Co-Athlete's of the Week for their performances this past Friday at the Joe Donahue Indoor Games. Both athletes finished first in their respective events and set personal bests, moving their way up the UMass Indoor Record Book.
The Mintewomen experienced déjà vu on Friday at the Joe Donahue Indoor Games thanks to Becky Stoyle's first place finish in the triple jump. Stoyle two weeks ago set a new personal best and bettered the fourth best mark all-time at UMass in the event with her first place mark. Friday the sophomore did just that again but led her team to a three-way tie for first place while placing first for the Minutewomen in the triple jump. The sophomore bested her fourth all-time mark in the triple jump from 38-feet, 6.75-inches to 38-feet, 11.5-inches. Stoyle is now just 2.75-inches away from the third best all-time mark.
On Friday afternoon the Minutemen also received a first place performance from their freshman, Michael Cyphers. Two weeks ago the Lebanon, N.H. native and teammate Gregory Copeland tied for the fourth best mark all-time at UMass in the indoor pole vault with a height of 15-feet, 1-inch. At the Joe Donahue Indoor Games Cyphers pulled away and leaped a mark of 15-feet, 5-inches for third all-time, surpassing Wes Shaw's height of 15-feet, 3-inches. The freshman's mark was the best of the day in the pole vault, contributing to the team's fifth place finish.
The Minutemen will compete in the two-day Giegengack Invitational this weekend in New Haven, Conn. Day one of the meet will begin Friday, February 1 at 6:00 P.M. with part two of the meet beginning at 6:30 A.M. on Saturday, February 2. The Minutewomen will also compete this Saturday at the URI Coaches Invite in Kingston, R.I. at 11 A.M.
