KINGSTON, R.I. - Junior Ashley Creel (Sandwich, Mass.) finished third overall and first among UMass athletes in the 11th Annual Rhode Island Pentathlon. Amanda Griffin (Uxbridge, Mass.) and Katelyn Mitsock (Hopkinton, Mass.), both freshmen, finished eighth and tenth, respectively.

The pentathlon consists of five events: the 60-meter low hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and the 800-meter run.

Creel finished the day with 2,784 points, highlighted by her second-place finish in the high jump, with a leap of five-feet, one-inch. There was an intense competition for the third-place slot, but Creel was able to edge out Brianne Hudack of Sacred Heart University and Alison Warren of Northeastern, who posted scores of 2,779 and 2,778,respectively.

Griffin fared well in her first heptathlon. The freshman finished second in the long jump with a jump of 15-feet, two-and-1/4 inches, and third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:34.60.

The entire women's track team will return to action on Jan. 18 when they travel to Boston for the Boston University Quad Meet.
