Men's and Women's Track and Field Finishes Third at A-10 Championships.

RICHMOND, V.a. - The men's and women's track and field teams both earn third place finishes at the Atlantic 10 Championships in Richmond, V.a. The women scored 106.5 points and the men finished with 122 points.
Senior Kate Markopoulos (Porter Corner, N.Y.) was the A-10 Champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with her time of 11:06.30. Markopoulos also finished fourth in the 1,500-meter with a clocking of 4:44.84. Junior Christina Huff (Springfield, Mass.) placed second and third in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes with times of 11.81 and 25.33, respectively. Sophomore Elisabeth Budd (Springfield, Mass.) clocked a 1:04.00 in the 400-meter hurdles, good for a second-place finish. Senior Shannon Jackson (Bridgewater, Mass.) placed third in the 400-meter hurdles with her time of 1:04.30. Junior Jen Iasiello (Barrington, R.I.) marked a 157' 1" in the hammer throw to earn a second-place finish. Seniors Crystal Therrien (Fairhaven, Mass.) and Nastaran Shams (Swampscott, Mass.) earned a combined 14 points for the squad with their second- and third-place finishes, respectively, in the heptathlon.
Senior John O'Neil (North Reading, Mass.) was the Atlantic 10 Champion in the decathlon with his score of 6115 points. O'Neil also placed third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.68 and eighth in the pole vault with a mark of 11' 5-3/4". Junior Henry Smith (Ellington, Conn.) was the A-10 Champion in the triple jump with a new personal best mark of 46' 10-1/4". Junior Derek Swart (Southboro, Mass.) placed second in the long jump with a 23' 4" and sixth in the triple jump with a 42' 5-1/4", good for a combined 11 points. Graduate student Kwesi Frimpong-Boateng (Accra, Ghana) placed second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.62.
Junior James Godinho (Sandwich, Mass.) placed third in the long jump with a mark of 22' 10-1/2" and sixth in the high jump with a 6' 4-1/2", earning nine points for the team. Freshman Steve Gamble (Chicopee, Mass.) finished fourth in the shot put with a 45' 1-1/2", fourth in the discus with a 129" and sixth in the hammer throw with a 80' 6". Gamble earned 13 points for the squad. Junior Mike Carr (Rehoboth, Mass.) threw a 179' 11" in the javelin, earning a third-place finish.
The men and women will be back in action next on Saturday and Sunday, May 8-9 as they head to Dedham, Mass. to compete in the New England Championships.
