Bourque Continues To Impress, Improves to Fourth All-Time In Shot Put

DURHAM, N.H. - The Minutewomen ventured to the University of New Hampshire Saturday for one last meet until they host the outdoor A-10 Championships next weekend. Junior, Rachelle Bourque (Rowley, Mass.) finished the day with placing first in both the javelin and shot put. The Minutewomen also added two more New England qualifiers to their credit.
Rachelle Bourque improved to fourth all-time at UMass in the shot put after breaking into the record book and placing fifth all-time at the UMass Invitational two weeks prior. The junior placed first in the event with a distance of 43-10.00, she also placed first in the javelin throw with a mark of 134-04. Placing second to Bourque in the shot put was teammate Nalis Mbianda (Newton, Mass.) with a mark of 42-5.25.
Ashley Palmer (Phoenix, N.Y.) set a personal best while qualifying for the New England Championships in the long jump. She placed first in the event, leaping a distance of 17-11.50. Another freshman who set a personal best in outdoor competition was Rebecca Stoyle (Pembroke, Mass.). Stoyle placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 37-8.75. Senior, Chrissy Silvar (Fitchburg, Mass.) placed third in the pole vault with a mark of 10-8.75.
On the track Deanna Julian (Dudley, Mass.) placed first in the 800 meter run, crossing the finish line at 2:17.08. Not far behind was freshman teammate, Courtney Neves (New Bedford, Mass.). Neves finished in second place with a time of 2:17.88. Kayla Baldwin (Andover, Mass.) had a pair of third place finishes on Saturday. The sophomore placed third and qualified for New Englands in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12:32. Baldwin also placed third in the 200 meter dash, crossing the finish line at 25.91 and just missing the New England Championship qualifying time of 25.90. Sarah Barrett (Topsfield, Mass.) placed third in the 5000 meter run with a time of 18:35.78. In the 400 meter hurdles, Sarah Bitterman (Marblehead, Mass.) finished with a time of 1:06.09, placing her third in the event. The 4x400 meter relay team continued their success placing first in the meet. Katie Powers (Holbrook, Mass.), Meghan Leahy (Sterling, Mass.), Sarah Bitterman, and Meghan Landry (Marshfield, Mass.) all combined for a time of 3:59.07.
This week the Minutewomen will continue to prepare for the Atlantic 10 Championships. The A-10 Championships are slated for May 5 and May 6, this Saturday and Sunday, at the UMass Track and Field Complex. The last time the Minutewomen competed at home was on April 14 for the UMass Invitational where they placed second out of 15 teams in their toughest meet of the season.
