STORRS, Conn. - Freshman Kristen Bakanowski (Northboro, Mass.) recorded the second-best pole vault mark in UMass women's outdoor track and field history and qualified for the ECAC Championship Meet as she led UMass to a fifth-place finish at the UConn Select Invitational.
Bakanowski, who tied the indoor pole vault record earlier this year, finished second overall with her mark of 12-feet even. She improved on her previous best mark of the outdoor season by just over six inches.
Along with Bakanowski, senior Christina Huff (Springfield, Mass.) posted two top-10 finishes at the meet. Huff took second in the 100-meter dash (12.68 seconds) and fourth in the 200-meter dash (25.70 seconds).
Freshman Christina DeRosa (Sound Beach, N.Y.) recorded her second-best effort of the season in the 5,000-meter run as she took second overall with her time of 17:55.48.
In the long jump, sophomore Dawn Soares (New Bedford, Mass.) posted her best jump of the season as she took fifth with a leap of 17-feet, 7.5 inches. That mark is the team's top long jump this season.
Improving their 4x400 meter relay time for the third straight week, senior Shannon Williams (Swarthmore, Pa.), senior Elisabeth Budd (Springfield, Ma.), Bakanowski and Huff combined to finish fourth in 48.83 seconds.
Select members of the women's track and field team will compete in the Penn Relays this week, April 28-29, before the team heads back to Storrs for the UConn Invitational on Saturday, April 30.
