April 22, 2005
WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Ashley Creel (Sandwich, Mass.) and freshman Amanda Griffin (Uxbridge, Mass.) finished third and seventh, respectively, at the Holy Cross Heptathlon held on Wednesday and Thursday.
Creel's 3,878 points set a new career-high in the event. Her previous top mark came in the 2003 outdoor season when she finished fifth with 3,769 points at the Atlantic 10 Championships.
Creel finished Wednesday's action in second place after capturing third in the 100 hurdles (16.66 seconds), second in the high jump (5'3.25"), second in the shot put (29'1") and eighth in the 200 meter dash (28.62 seconds).
Griffin competed in her first collegiate heptathlon earning 3,433 points for a seventh-place finish. A tie for third in the high jump (5'1") on Wednesday and a fifth-place finish in the long jump (15'7") on Thursday highlighted her performance.
The heptathlon is made up of seven events: 100 hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200 meter dash, long jump, javelin, and the 800 meter run. Student-athletes accumulate points based on their performances in each event to achieve their total score.
The men's and women's track and field teams will return to action this weekend when they compete at the UConn Invitational.
