UMass sits tied at 18th place with Wheaton Mass., Southern Maine and Providence after day one of the New England Championships at Boston University. Senior Chrissy Silvar (Fitchburg, Mass.) led the Minutewomen with a strong showing in the pole vault on Friday. Silvar took eighth place while adding to the team score with a mark of 11-06.50. Another event UMass had success in was in the distance medley relay. Courtney Baldwin (Lowell, Mass.), Meghan Leahy (Sterling, Mass.), Courtney Neves New Bedford, Mass.) and Rachel Hilliard (Hookstown, Pa.) all contributed to a 12:10.85 seventh place finish in the event. The team's performance also benefitted the Minutewomen in team score.
Competing well enough on day one in the preliminary events to compete in day two were Sarah Bitterman (Marblehead, Mass.), Katie Powers (Holbrook, Mass.), and Deanna Julian (Dudley, Mass.). Bitterman had success in the 500 meter dash, qualifying for the finals with a time of 1:17.74. Both, Deanna Juliand and Katie Powers set personal records on Friday. Julian finished the 1000 meter run in 2:56.92 while Powers competed in the same event and finished with a time of 2:57.99.
Some other notables were Michelle Jenssen (Mansfield, Mass.), Camille Edwards (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and Jaclyn Lam (Stockton, Cal.). Jenssen placed 15th overall in the 400 meter dash preliminaries. Jenssen crossed the finish line at 58.37. Edwards and Lam both had strong showings in the long jump, both falling middle of the pack. Edwards placed 14th leaping for a mark of 16-08.00. Lam wasn't far behind Edwards with a mark of 16-07.75.
On day two of the championships not only will day one's qualifiers compete but many others will as well. Courtney Baldwin (Lowell, Mass.) will compete in the mile run. Rebecca Stoyle (Pembroke, Mass.) will get her shot at qualifying for the ECAC in the triple jump while Nalis Mbianda (Newton, Mass.) and Rachelle Bourque (Rowley, Mass.) will display their talents in the shot put. Finishing off the New England Championships are the 4x800 and 4x400 meter relay teams.
