Women's Track Off To A Strong Start At The New England Championship

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - On day one of competition in Cambridge, Mass. at the New England Championship, UMass was led in the field by Katherine Finnegan, Ashley Palmer and Sarah Bierly while the Minutewomen ran well on the track as well; qualifying five for the finals.
Finnegan jumped 18-feet, 3.75-inches in order to finish the event in fifth place overall in her final indoor New England Championship. Her younger teammate Palmer followed up with an eighth place leap of 17-feet, 9.75-inches. Bierly did not score for the Minutewomen however the freshman did manage to continue her progression and set a new personal best in the pole vault; vaulting 11-feet, 1.75-inches.
On the track Maria Marascia and Sarah Bittermann both qualified for the finals in the 500 meter dash. Marascia ran the preliminaries in a season best 1-minute, 18.16-seconds. Bittermann tied her season best finishing the event in 1-minute, 16.87-seconds.
In longer distance Katie Powers also ran a season best to propel her to the finals in the 1,000 meter run. The sophomore ran a 2-minute, 59.32-second race in event. The quad selected for the distance medley relay also set a season best time on Friday afternoon. Marascia, Carly Zinner, Michelle Jenssen and Rachel Hilliard combined for a finishing time of 12-minutes, 22.74-seconds.
The UMass women's track and field team is back in action in Cambridge, Mass. for day two of the 2013 Indoor New England Championship at 10:00 A.M. Saturday morning in the Track and Tennis Center. Becky Stoyle will start off the day in the triple jump and will look to continue her success and qualify for nationals. The sophomore currently sits at 29th in the nation and the top 20 compete in Nationals.
