NORTH KINGSTON, R.I. -
Friday marked the first day of the Atlantic 10 Championships and along with seven New England Championship qualifying performances, Chrissy Silvar (Fitchburg, Mass.) joined the company of Karen Roa and Nalis Mbianda by qualifying for the ECAC. The seniors mark of 11-09.75 placed her 4th overall at the championship meet and moved her from fifth all-time at UMass to tied for fourth all-time. Silvar's career best mark tied her with Rihanna DaCruz's mark that was set back in 2003.
Deanna Julian (Dudley, Mass.) had a strong performance in the 1000 meter run placing 4th overall. The senior finished with a New England Championship qualifying time of 2:58.46. Julian will get her chance to compete in the finals on day two of the A-10 Championships.
Kaylee DeVincent (Southborough, Mass.) added herself to the list of Minutewomen to compete next weekend at the New England Championships. The junior placed 11th overall with a mark of 50-00.00. This was her first NEC qualifying performance of the year.
The distance medley relay contributed to UMass' success so far, finishing in 12:09.12. Courtney Baldwin (Andover, Mass.), Deanna Julian, Sarah Bitterman (Marblehead, Mass.), and Karen Roa (Jamaica, N.Y.) all contributed to an eighth place finish.
Still to come many of UMass' top performers will compete in their events.
In the field Nalis Mbianda (Newton, Mass.) and Rachelle Bourque (Rowley, Mass.) will get to display their talents in the shot put. Rebecca Stoyle (Pembroke, Mass.), Jaclyn Lam (Stockton, Cal.) and Lauren Kappleman (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) will all get their shot at a championship in the triple jump. Lam will also compete in the high jump along with Rebecca Banker(Salem, Conn.).
On the track, Sarah Bitterman qualified to compete in the finals in the 500 meter run. Bitterman finished fifth overall with a time of 1:17.99. Courtney Baldwin (Lowell, Mass.) and Rachel Hilliard (Hookstown, Pa.) will get their shot when they compete in the mile run. Senior, Karen Roa will get her chance at glory when she competes alongside Hannah White (Holden, Mass.) and Megan Cummings (Cary, Ill.) in the 3000 meter run. Also the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relay teams will compete tomorrow as well.
