The Minutewomen had their first two ECAC qualifiers this weekend, along with eight New England qualifiers and two first place finishes while claiming fourth overall as a team in a very competitive Joe Donahue Indoor Games.
Qualifying for the ECAC's are senior harrier, Karen Roa (Jamaica, N.Y.) and junior thrower, Nalis Mbianda (Newton, Mass). Both will compete in the ECAC's for a third year straight.
Karen Roa was back in action this weekend and qualified with a time of 9:53.11 in the 3000 meter run. The senior also placed third in the meet.
Mbianda accomplished two of her goals this weekend qualifying for the ECAC's in the shot put in the midst of a solid performance at the first annual Joe Donahue Indoor Games. The junior hoped to give a strong performance this weekend in honor of the Northeastern coach who passed away this fall. Donahue recruited Mbianda coming out of high school. Mbianda claimed first place in the shot put this weekend with a mark of 44-09.50.
Along with Roa and Mbianda, six other Minutewomen qualified for the New England Championships on Friday. Sophomore, Sarah Bitterman (Marblehead, Mass.) placed first in the 500 meter dash with a time of 1:17.58, qualifying her for the NEC's. Deanna Julian (Dudley, Mass.) is a New England qualifier in the 1000 meter run. The senior took sixth in the event with a time of 3:00.39. Rachelle Bourque (Rowley, Mass.) also qualified for New England's in the shot put with a distance of 41-09.25, placing third overall.
Rounding off the New England qualifiers are three freshmen. Rebecca Stoyle (Pembroke, Mass.) repeats this week qualifying in the triple jump while placing fourth overall. Along with Stoyle, Jaclyn Lam (Stockton, Cal.) qualified in the triple jump while claiming fifth overall with a mark of 37-04.00. Harrier, Katie Powers (Holbrook, Mass.) placed eighth overall in the 1000 meter run with a time of 3:02.45. Powers and Lam qualified for the New England Championships for the first time in their collegiate careers.
Other contributors to the team's success and strong competitors this weekend are Rebecca Banker, Chrissy Silvar, and Kaylee DeVincent. Sophomore, Rebecca Banker (Salem, Conn.) placed eighth in the high jump with a height of 5-00.25. Senior, Chrissy Silvar (Fitchburg, Mass.) leaped for fourth in the pole vault with a mark of 10-11.75. Junior thrower, Kaylee DeVincent (Southborough, Mass.) claimed fourth in the shot put, throwing for a distance of 40-09.50.
Also contributing to UMass' score Friday were the 4x400 meter relay and the distance medley relay team. The 4x400 meter relay took fourth overall with a time of 4:02.24 and the distance medley squad claimed third in the meet with a time of 12:29.44
