Wilson Sets Another School Record At Great Dane Invite
NEW YORK, N.Y. - Senior Lisa Wilson continued her great start to the 2010 indoor track season by setting her second school record of the year at the Great Dane Invitational. Wilson helped lead UMass to a fifth place finish out of 25 teams. Her record setting mark of 55-01.5 in the weight throw was good for third place at the meet. Wilson now holds five school records combined for indoor and outdoor track and field. Her superb mark in the weight throw qualifies Wilson for the ECAC Championship meet after previously qualifying for the New England Championships at last week's BU Quad Meet. Wilson also improved upon her record setting shot put mark from last week by taking third place in the event (45-01.75). In her first meet of her UMass career, freshman Nalis Mbianda took fourth in the shot put and notched the second highest all-time mark at UMass. With her toss of 44-08.25, Mbianda qualified for the ECAC Championships. If Lisa Wilson had not thrown for the shot put record at the meet, Mbianda would have set a UMass record at her first collegiate meet. Freshman Nicole Pompei won the pole vault and set a UMass top five all-time mark for the second consecutive meet. Her height of 11-11.75 now puts Pompei third all-time at UMass in the pole vault. She improved upon her height of 11-05.75 at the BU Quad Meet and now qualifies for the ECAC Championships as well as the New England Championships. These great accomplishments come in only her second career collegiate track meet. Another notable performance came from Courtney Baldwin. The true freshman notched a second place finish and qualified for the New England Championships in the 1000 meter run with her time of 2:56.92. Baldwin has now qualified for the New England Championships in the mile and 1000 meter run.
Junior Ida Okkonen placed fourth in the long jump, qualifying for the New England Championships and scoring five points (18-03.75). In the 800 meters, junior Gina Perno finished sixth with a time of 2:18.88. Redshirt junior Shiyi Zan took eighth in the 5000 meter run, crossing at 18:33.81. Senior Brittany Bakanowski also placed eighth in the 500 meter dash and improved upon her qualifying time for the New England Championships (1:16.39). Junior Stephanie Aguguo grabbed fifth place and qualified for the New England Championships in the triple jump with a mark of 38-01.5. The Minutewomen will head to The Reebok Boston Indoor Games next Friday in Roxbury, Mass. The women's meet will start at 3:30 p.m. |
