In Wake Of Loss, UMass Tennis Continues To Raise Funds For Cancer Research

June 29, 2012

Maria Francis battled cancer for eight years before succumbing to the disease on June 10, 2012. Her daughter, Gianna, is a rising sophomore on the UMass women's tennis team - a group which became more than just a support group for her, but for her mother and all who battle the disease as well.

Part of that support came in the way of partnering with Stand Up To Cancer which is a national organization that raises money for cancer research. The group partners with scientist and doctors focusing on collaborative research in an effort to bring treatments that will directly benefit patients in need.

For its part, the UMass tennis team started Team Maria Francis as part of the SUTC network. The Minutewomen have been able to raise $1,800 towards research thanks to supporters who purchase a $5 wristband.

Along with the team page on the SUTC website, the team also started a facebook page to help promote the cause through social media.

Gianna's family and the members of the UMass tennis team have asked that fans continue to support Team Maria in the fight against cancer.
