Yuliana Motyl, Arielle Griffin Earn A-10 Weekly Tennis Honors

AMHERST, Mass. - After helping the UMass tennis team to a 3-0 week to close out the regular-season, Yuliana Motyl and Arielle Griffin each earned Atlantic 10 Weekly honors as announced by the league office on Tuesday. Motyl was named the Co-Player of the Week, while Griffin was tabbed the Co-Rookie of the Week. The Minutewomen return to action on Thursday in the opening round of the A-10 Championship Tournament against Dayton at Noon.
UMass defeated Rhode Island 6-1 and had a pair of 7-0 wins over Bryant and Sacred Heart last week to close out the regular-season. With a 14-5 overall record and a 6-1 mark against Atlantic 10 teams, the Minutewomen earned the No. 3 seed in this week's A-10 Championship Tournament held in Charlotteville, Va.
In the three wins last week, Motyl was 2-0 at No. 1 singles (both straight set wins) and 3-0 and No. 1 doubles to lead the Minutewomen. In singles play, the junior gave up just four points in four sets played.
As UMass' top doubles player alongside Chantal Swiszcz, Motyl improved to 16-3 in dual matches and 21-7 overall this season. In singles play, she improved to 8-10 at No. 1 singles in dual matches and 10-15 overall.
Griffin was 3-0 in singles play and 3-0 in doubles play. She won two tie-break matches at No. 3 singles and posted a straight set win at No. 4 singles. In doubles play, she earned a pair of wins with Jessica Podlofsky in the No. 2 match and another with Podlofsky in the No. 3 match.
Following the week's action, Griffin is now 13-3 in singles play in dual matches and 18-6 in singles play overall. In doubles play, she and Podlofsky are now 13-4 in dual matches and 16-8 overall.
This marks the second time this season that Griffin has been honored with the league's Rookie of the Week honor and the first time Motyl has earned the Player of the Week accolade.
