AMHERST, Mass. - Senior Michele Spiess has been named Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Performer of the Week for her efforts vs. Columbia and St. John's. Spiess went 2-0 at No. 1 singles and 1-1 at No. 1 doubles as the Minutewomen split a pair of matches over the weekend.
Spiess, who won A-10 Player of the Week four times last year, has captured her first of 2007. On Saturday, she defeated Milena Kachar of Columbia in No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-3. Kachar entered the match ranked 19th in the ITA East Regional Rankings. Spiess also teamed with freshman Ellen de Jong to defeat Kachar and Carling Donovan, 8-3. The Minutewomen were defeated, 4-3 on Saturday.
On Sunday, Spiess won a hard-fought No. 1 singles match, 6-2, 6-3. Her point proved to be important as UMass edged St. John's 4-3.
Spiess currently stands at 56-12 in singles play for her career. She is eight singles wins shy of breaking the UMass all-time record held by Jackie Braunstein.
