Tennis Hosts Pair Of Weekend Matches

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass tennis team hosts its first dual meets of the spring season this weekend beginning with Bryant University on Saturday, February 8, followed by Long Island University on Sunday, February 9. Both match-ups against the Northeast Conference opponents are scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. start time.

Bryant University enters the weekend with an undefeated 4-0 record in dual match-ups for the 2013 fall season. The team's meeting with UMass marks its first dual-match for the Bulldogs in their spring campaign.

UMass tennis is 3-0 in program history against Bryant University since the teams first met in 2011. The last meeting between UMass and Bryant saw the Minutewomen sweep the Bulldogs 7-0 on April 13, 2013 with Yuliana Motyl, Sonia Bokhari, Jessica Podlofsky, Arielle Griffin and Chanel Glasper each winning their doubles and singles matches. UMass won all six singles matches in straight sets beginning with Motyl's 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles.

Following their meeting with Bryant, the Minutewomen face-off against Long Island University for the sixth time in program history on Sunday, February 8. The contest also marks the first dual meet for the NEC opponent in the spring season.

UMass is undefeated against Long Island, posting a perfect 5-0 record that began in 2006 when the Minutewomen bested the Blackbirds 6-1 on the road. In their last contest, the Minutewomen clinched a 6-1 victory over Long Island on March 14, 2012 featuring strong singles and doubles showings from Motyl and Podlofsky. Glasper also won her singles match on straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot.



This weekend's weather advisory for Amherst, Mass. predicts a mostly sunny afternoon for Saturday at 31 degrees with a low of 16. Sunday's forecast however predicts a 50% chance of snow with a low of 15 degrees.

Following this weekend's pair of matches the Minutewomen return home next weekend for two more home contests. UMass will face Army on Friday, February 14 at 10:30 a.m. and Boston College on Sunday, February 16 at 12:30 p.m.
