Tennis Opens Spring Campaign With Pair Of Matches
Jan. 31, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - Coming off a strong fall season, the UMass women's tennis team is back in action for the spring season beginning this weekend with a pair of matches. The Minutewomen will head to Brown on Friday afternoon before returning home to host Atlantic 10 rival Saint Joseph's at the Bay Road Tennis Center (Directions) at 12:30 PM.
During the fall season, UMass had several strong showings at the Columbia Invitational, the West Point Invitational and the Big Green Invitational. The Minutewomen also posted a 2-0 record in dual matches with wins at Providence (5-2) and at Connecticut (7-0).
Friday's match will be a tough early test for UMass as Brown enters the week ranked No. 67 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Top 75. The Bears have had a tough start to the season with a 7-0 loss at No. 16 Michigan and a 4-0 loss to No. 53 Missouri.
Sunday's match against Saint Joseph's will also mark the third time the Hawks have played in the new calendar year. Saint Joseph's lost at Penn (7-0) but defeated Navy (5-2) last week.
UMass was without the services of senior Julia Comas for much of the fall, but will have her back in the lineup for the spring semester. That forced some shuffling of the line-up which should give the Minutewomen depth in each singles position. Overall, UMass finished the fall with an overall 41-38 record in singles matches. On the doubles side, UMass was 22-16 overall.
