Tennis Sweeps Past Amherst, 7-0

AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team (1-0) lost just one singles set as it defeated cross-town rival Amherst College, 7-0, this afternoon at the Upper Boyden Courts. This match was started on Sept. 21, but suspended due to darkness. The Jefs went to the Division III National Championship last year and finished the season ranked No. 2 in the country.
UMass won at number two doubles, as senior Sasha Edelstein (Haifa, Israel) and junior Jana Bartoloni (Charlestown, Mass.) defeated Kristen Raverta and Katie Hudson, 9-7, and at number three doubles with junior Dorothy Iwanowicz (Hilton Head, S.C.) and junior Susan Johnson (Annapolis, Md.) besting Erin Murphy and Laura Stein, 8-0. Amherst won the number one doubles, as Rachel Holt and Alicia Menezes downed freshman Masha Pozar (Ljublijana, Slovenia) and sophomore Michele Spiess (Stuttgart, Germany), 8-2.
At No. 1 singles, Spiess downed Raverta, 6-3, 6-4. At No. 2, Pozar defeated Holt, 6-1, 7-5, while Edelstein was victorious at No. 3, 6-4, 6-4 over Menezes. Iwanowicz was a victor over Hudson at No. 4, 6-0, 6-3, while Johnson won in straight sets over Stein at No. 5 6-3, 6-3. At No. 6, Bartoloni downed Murphy in the closest match of the day, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (8-7).
UMass will complete its match with UConn on Thursday, Oct. 7, at 2:45 p.m. The match was started yesterday, but called due to rain. UMass won the doubles point and was ahead in five of the six singles matches.
