UMass Doubles Help Team To A 4-3 Victory Over Connecticut

AMHERST, Mass.- The Minutewomen took on Connecticut today in their first dual meet of the 2007-08 season. The top six singles teams split on the day giving three points to each team, it was the doubles matches that helped push UMass to victory as all three doubles teams defeated the Huskies.
The No. 1 doubles team of Masha Pozar and Candynce Boney continued their winning ways by defeating the Connecticut number one team of Kelley LoRusso and Allison Campitiello 8-1. Tanisha Hodgson and her partner Kaitlyn Carpenter defeated Jessica Porter and BreAnn Cheung 8-2 in the No. 2 doubles competition. Finally in the No. 3 doubles competition, Laura Murillo and Maude Lecluyse beat Katie Moritz and Emily Herb 8-4. The three UMass doubles wins gave UMass the early lead on the day, 1-0.
In singles play, however, UMass split on the day. Two of the matches were over early as Boney crushed Jessica Porter (6-1, 6-2) in the No. 3 doubles match and Emily Herb beat Hodgson (6-2, 6-0) in No. 2 singles. UMass continued to hold onto their lead 2-1.
Two more teams finished up after the one hour mark but this time UConn was the victor as BreAnn Cheung defeated Carpenter (6-2, 6-4) in No. 4 singles and Allison Campitiello beat Lecluyse in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) in No. 5 singles taking the match lead, 3-2.
With the two hour mark nearing in the match both Pozar and Murillo defeated their opponents, Pozar defeating Kelley LoRusso in three games (6-4, 4-6, 6-0) in No. 1 singles and Murillo defeating Megan Doran (6-2, 7-5). These wins gave UMass two match points and put them on top of UConn, 4-3 as they won their first dual meet of the season.
UMass is back in action at the Dartmouth Big Green Invitational which will take place October 26-28 in Hanover, N.H.
