Podlofsky & Glasper Take Flight Titles At Army Tourney
Sept. 25, 2011
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Jessica Podlofsky and Chanel Glasper won singles flight titles to highlight the conclusion of a big weekend for the UMass women's tennis team at the Eastern Collegiate Invitational at Army on Sunday. Podlofsky won the Flight B title to remain undefeated on the season while Glasper took the Flight C crown as the freshman went to 7-1 on the season.
UMass began the weekend with eight players in singles action. Six advanced to quarterfinal matches, five made the semifinals, and Podlofsky and Glasper both advanced to win two of the floor flights against a challenging field that included many of the top teams in the Northeast.
Podlofsky, as the No. 4 seed in Flight B, went 4-0 for the second weekend in a row, improving to a perfect 8-0 with two tournament titles on the season. The sophomore defeated Atlantic 10 foe Marissa Brossard of St. Bonaventure in the finals, 7-5, 6-3.
Last week at the Harvard Fall Classic, Podlofsky went 4-0 to win the Flight B singles title.
Glasper, unseeded in Flight C, defeated both the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds on her way to Sunday's final where she defeated Stony Brook's Polina Movchan, 6-4, 6-1. The freshman is now 7-1 on the season after reaching the Flight C singles final at last week's Harvard Fall Classic.
Judy Dixon's squad begins dual match play on Saturday, Oct. 1 when it hosts Providence at 1 p.m. at the Mullins Courts, the first of two home matches in a row.
