Tennis Turns In Strong Performances At Brown Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The UMass tennis team opened its 2013-14 season with a strong showing at the Brown Invitational over the weekend of Sept. 20-22. The field included Binghamton, Boston College, Boston University, Buffalo, Providence, and Rutgers. UMass had a pair of doubles teams pick of three wins with Sonia Bokhari and Iris Raileanu placing fourth overall. Leading the Minutewomen in singles play were Yuliana Motyl who won the consolation championship of the Gold Singles Flight, while Chanel Glasper reached the consolation championship match of the Blue Singles Flight.
In doubles action, the tandem of Glasper and Jessica Podlofsky picked up three wins during the weekend. After an opening round loss to Boston College's Katya Vasilyev and Emily Safron, the duo won three straight matches to reach the Consolation Finals for the Bear Doubles Flight. Glasper and Podlofsky fell in the championship match to the host duo of Sarah Kandath and Ammu Mandalap 8-5.
Also in that group was Aarzoo Malik and Motyl who fell to Boston University's Johanna Hyoty and Barbara Rodriquez in the opening round before bouncing back with a win against Brown's Mariska Chamdani and Nikita Uberoi.
In the Eagle Doubles Flight, Bokhari and Raileanu took fourth overall with a pair of opening round wins before falling in the 3rd-place match. The pair then defeated the consolation round champion team of Shea Brodsky and Alexis Tashiro from Binghamton to place 4th overall.
Motyl led UMass in singles action as she won the consolation championship of the Gold Singles Flight. She won the first set 6-3, but the match was ended early due to an injury of Rutgers' Lindsey Kayati in the second set.
After falling in the opening round of the Blue Singles Flight, Glasper picked up a win against Providence to reach the consolation championship match, but was defeated 8-3 by Buffalo's Marta Stoyanova.
The Minutewomen will return to action this Saturday, Sept. 28 against Providence at the Mullins Center Tennis Courts. Admission and parking are both free to all. The dual match is slated for a 1 PM start.
