Tennis Opens Fall Season At Columbia Invitational

NEW YORK - After a Friday win over Harvard's Hai-Li Kong, UMass women's tennis freshman Arielle Griffin advanced to the Columbia Invitational C Flight Semifinals on Saturday to lead the Minutewomen in the first action of the 2012 fall season. Griffin also teamed up with Jessica Podlofsky on Friday to defeat Harvard's Sylvia Li and and Crystal Yen in the Flight B Doubles before falling in the quarterfinals.
In all, UMass picked up three wins in doubles action, two wins in the singles main draw and four wins in the consolation draw. The Minutewomen will return to action next Friday, Sept. 21 through Sunday, Sept. 23 when UMass head's to West Point, N.Y., for the Eastern Collegiate Invitational.
Podlofsky and Griffin followed that up with the Flight B Doubles win (9-8) before being knocked out by Fordham's Anika Novacek and Julie Leong, 8-6.
In Saturday's singles matches, Griffin defeated Ksenia Mikhaylova (6-4, 7-5) in the quarterfinals bracket before bowing out to Harvard's Amanda Lin (6-3, 6-2) in the C Flight Main Draw.
Swiszcz (C Flight), Motyl (A Flight), Francis (D Flight) and Jocelyn Providence (D Flight) all earned consolation singles wins to close out Saturday's competition.

1st round: Motyl-Swiszcz def. Simidian-Dabu (Fordham) 8-4
Quarterfinals: Sanon-Takenaga (Columbia) def. Motyl-Swiszcz 8-2
