As Army Invitational Wraps Up, UMass Doubles Come Away With A Tourney Win

West Point, N.Y. - The UMass doubles team of Candynce Boney and Masha Pozar came away with the First Doubles Main Bracket Championship at the Army Invitational in West Point, N.Y. this weekend in their first tournament of the year.
The number two team of Boney/Pozar defeated the number one ranked teak of Anela Dujsic and Polina Zaretsr (Rutgers) 9-8 (10) in the final round match Sunday after three days of play.
Boney/Pozar first took part in quarterfinal and semifinal play on Saturday defeating the host team of Michael Tollerton and Charlee Warford (Army) 8-3 in the quarterfinals and then taking on and beating Courtney Dorsey and Laura Marin (Howard) 8-6 in the semifinal match.
In the other doubles bracket of the tournament, two UMass teams took part in quarterfinal play on Saturday.
The doubles team of Maude Lecluyse and Laura Murillo took their play into the semifinal round defeating Alex Albano and Lanna Buhler of Duquesne 8-1 in the quarterfinal round but falling to the number one ranked pair of Lauren Lucido and Tania Varela of Bucknell 8-4 in the semifinals. The pair would eventually go on to take the Second Doubles Main Bracket Championship Sunday.
The other UMass team in the second doubles bracket was Kristin DiPiero and Carly Ludmer. DiPiero and Ludmer also took their play into Saturday making it to the quarterfinal rounds, but lost to host team and number four seeded Anne Hang and Robie Vernono 8-4 ending their tournament run.
Tanisha Hodgson, the lone singles player to make it into the quarterfinal round for UMass was defeated by Lauren Clifton of Hofstra, 6-0;6-0 in that same round ending her play in the invitational.
The Minutewoman are back in action next at the Cissy Leary Invitational in Philadelphia, Penn on September 21.
