COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The first-seeded University of Massachusetts tennis team defeated No. 8 Duquesne, 4-0, in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament this afternoon at the Tennis Center in Maryland. Duquesne beat Saint Joseph's in the first round 4-0, and advanced to face UMass which was rewarded a bye as the No. 1 seed.

UMass opened the match by sweeping the doubles competition. Juniors Dorothy Iwanowicz (Hilton Head, S.C.) and Susan Johnson (Arnold, Md.) took the No. 1 singles match, 8-2. Freshman Masha Pozar (Ljublijana, Slovenia) and sophomore Michele Spiess (Stuttgart, Germany) won at No. 2 doubles, 8-3, while junior Jana Bartoloni (Quincy, Mass.) and senior Sasha Edelstein (Haifa, Israel) won by default, as their opponents could not finish.

In singles, Spiess continued her winning ways and took the No. 1 match, 6-2, 6-2. Edelstein swept her opponent in the No. 3 slot, while Iwanowicz won at No. 4, 6-1, 6-3. Pozar won the first set of her match, 6-1, and was up 5-0 before her opponent could not finish.

UMass will square off against No. 4 Temple tomorrow at 10:30 AM in the semifinals. The Owls defeated No. 5 George Washington 4-2. Earlier in the season on March 24, the Minutewomen snuck by Temple, 4-3.
