CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - After No. 6 seed George Washington won back-to-back singles matches to pull within a point of the No. 3 seed UMass women's tennis team, Arielle Griffin and Jessica Podlofsky sealed a 4-2 win to advance the Minutewomen into the Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament Semifinals. Xavier defeated No. 7 seed Fordham 4-3 earlier in Friday's action. The other semifinal match-up will pit No. 1 seed VCU against No. 4 seed Richmond in the 10 AM match at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville.
UMass started Friday's quarterfinal match by earning the doubles point thanks to wins by Sonia Bokhari and Chanel Glasper in the No. 3 doubles match and Griffin and Podlofsky in the No. 2 doubles match.
The Minutewomen took a 3-0 lead when Chanel Glasper won the No. 5 singles match in straight sets (6-2, 6-1). Griffin followed that with a straight set (6-1, 6-3) win at No. 3 singles.
The Colonials fought back winning the No. 6 and No. 1 singles matches to make the score 3-2.
With Yuliana Motyl's match at No. 2 singles playing in a tie-breaker set, Podlofsky managed to defeat Mimi Hamling in two sets (6-4, 6-2) to provide the match-winning point.
The match against Xavier will give the Minutewomen a chance to avenge its only loss this season to an Atlantic 10 foe. Xavier won the earlier meeting 4-3 in Cincinnati.
The winner will play for the Atlantic 10 Championship Title on Sunday, April 21 at 10 AM.
