April 19, 2009
MONROEVILLE, Pa. - Just as UMass Head Women's Tennis Coach Judy Dixon had predicted, it came down to the wire in Sunday's match against eighth-seeded Saint Louis, which the Billikens took, 4-3. The Minutewomen (11-15) started off strong, winning the doubles point, but then fell just short in the singles, winning two of the four matches. The loss gave the Minutewomen sixth place overall in the Atlantic 10 Championships.
The doubles play highlighted UMass with wins coming at Nos. 1 and 3. At No. 1, the team of Magdalena Ploch and Tanisha Hodgson bested their opponents in a dominating 8-2 win. At No. 3 doubles, Candynce Boney and Lauren MacKay also saw an 8-2 victory to clinch the doubles point.
In singles play the Minutewomen and Billikens both earned their first win at the same time with flights 2 and 3 matches ending at the same time. At No. 2, UMass' Boney defeated Saint Louis' Miller, 6-3, 6-2. The other singles win for UMass came at No. 5 where Maude Lecluyse defeated Kasia Tomalak, 6-0, 7-6(5). Both No. 1 and No. 4 singles matches came down to decisive super-tiebreaks (played in lieu of a third set) which both went in Saint Louis' favor.
The match marks the end of the 2008-2009 tennis season for Massachusetts. The Minutewomen had an 11-15 season record, with their eleventh win earning head coach Dixon her 200th career win at UMass.
