Tennis Tops George Washington, 6-1

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team topped George Washington, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon in a match played at Temple. The win lifts UMass to 6-11 overall this spring and 3-1 in the Atlantic 10.
The Minutewomen earned their six points when they clinched the doubles point after winning two of the three matches and then won five out of the six singles matches. Stephanie Price (Columbia, Mo.) and Jafra Depontes (Kaliua-Kona, Hawaii) defeated Tracy Wei and Lindy First, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. Sasha Edelstein (Haifa, Israel) and Dorothy Iwanowicz (Hilton Head, S.C.) clinched the point for UMass when they defeated Nazli Gencsoy and Sevla Gonca, 8-5.
In singles, the Minutewomen claimed victories in all but one match. Playing at No. 1 singles, Price defeated Nazli Gencsoy, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6. Depontes topped First, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2 singles and Edelstein defeated Natasha Bode, 6-2, 6-2. Massachusetts had to battle for victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles when Iwanowicz came back fto beat Sam Fisher, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, and Susan Hyams (Cincinnati, Ohio) defeated Bartell, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Massachusetts will play its last match of the regular season on Monday when they travel to Quinnipiac for a 2:30 p.m. match.
