Tennis Cruises Past Rhode Island For 3rd Straight A-10 Win

KINGSTON, R.I. - With a sweep of doubles play and wins in five-of-six singles matches, the UMass women's tennis team defeated Rhode Island 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon. The win improves the Minutewomen to 12-5 overall on the season and 6-1 in Atlantic 10 play. UMass won three of the singles matches in straight sets, while Jessica Podlofsky and Arielle Griffin each won three-set matches at No. 2 and No. 3 singles respectively.
The Minutewomen earned the opening point of the day with a clean sweep of the three doubles matches.
Rhode Island opened singles play with a straight set win by Galina Chernykh over Sonia Bokhari (6-4, 6-2), but from there it was all UMass.
Podlofsky lost her opening set at No. 2 singles to Nithila Asokaraj 6-4, but rallied back to take the second and third sets 6-4 and 10-4 respectively.
At No. 3 singles, Griffin also fell in the opening set, but bounced back to win her match with a 7-6 second set and a 10-7 third set.
The Minutewomenw will return to action this Saturday at Bryant (12 PM) before returning home to host Sacred Heart on Sunday. The match against Sacred Heart will be Senior Day and will be played at the Mullins Center Tennis Courts behind the Mullins Center and adjacent to Earl Lorden Baseball Field.
