Women's Tennis Tops Rhode Island, 7-0

KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team (6-10) defeated the University of Rhode Island (9-7) 7-0 this afternoon on the Rams' home courts, ending UMass' five-match skid.
Massachusetts got off to a perfect start by taking all three doubles matches, earning the doubles point. Senior Jafra Depontes (Kaliua-Kona, Hawaii) played her first match since rejoining the team and was paired with junior Stephanie Price (Columbia, Mo.) at the #1 doubles spot. The tandem dispatched Erin Fleming and Jen Seide, 8-1. At the #2 position, sophomore Dorothy Iwanowicz (Hilton Head, S.C.) and freshman Christine Liehr (Stuttgart, Germany) teamed up to take out Jessica Collins and Erin Dwyer by a score of 8-1, while the #3 match saw co-captains senior Susan Hyams (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Sasha Edelstein (Haifa, Israel) shut out Becca Hedden and Meredith Haas, 8-0.
The singles matches followed suit, as Massachusetts continued through without dropping a single set. Price defeated Fleming 6-1, 6-1 at the #1 spot, while the #2 match saw Liehr prevail over Seide, 7-6, 6-4, in the closest match of the contest. At the #3 position, Iwanowicz brushed aside Collins, 6-0, 6-2. Depontes took down Dwyer, 6-2, 6-2 in the #4 match, Hyams breezed by Hedden, 6-0, 6-0, at the #5 slot and sophomore Jana Bartoloni (Charleston, Mass.) downed Haas in the #6 matchup.
The Minutewomen will be back in action this weekend as they travel to Bronx, N.Y. for match with Fordham on Friday, April 2 and Xavier on Saturday, April 3. The matches will start at 3:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m., respectively.
