PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The University of Massachusetts (9-6, 1-0 A-10) topped Temple University (3-7, 2-1 A-10), 4-3, this afteroon in women's tennis action. Sophomore Michele Spiess (Stuttgart, Germany) won at No. 2 singles and doubles to lead the Minutewomen to victory in their first conference match of the season.

The Minutewomen split singles competition with the Owls. Spiess improved her singles record to 18-4 with a 6-3, 0-6, 6-0 win at No. 2. Junior Dorothy Iwanowicz (Hilton Head, S.C.) captured a win at No. 3, winning 6-3, 6-3, while senior Sasha Edelstein (Haifa, Israel) took her match at the No. 4 slot, 6-1 , 6-1. Freshman Masha Pozar (Ljublijana, Slovenia), junior Susan Johnson (Arnold, Md.), and junior Jana Bartoloni (Quincy, Mass.) lost their matches at No. 1, No. 5, and No. 6 singles, respectively.

The Minutewomen captured the doubles point and the match by winning two of the three matches. Spiess and Pozar easily won at No. 2, 8-0, while Edelstein and Bartoloni teamed up to win at No. 3, 8-4. Iwanowicz and Susan Johnson fell at the No. 1 slot, 8-3.

UMass is back in action in Philadelphia tomorrow when it faces Richmond in another A-10 showdown.
