March 16, 2013
DEDHAM, Mass. - The No. 62 Boston College women's tennis team became the first opponent to defeat UMass in doubles play this season and used that momentum to defeat the Minutewomen 7-0 on Friday night at the Dedham Health and Fitness Club. The Minutewomen will have the week off before heading to the Billy Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., next Sunday to face Long Island. For the Eagles on Friday, Jessica Wacnik and Alex Kelleher teamed up at No. 1 doubles to defeat UMass' Chantal Swiszcz and Yuliana Motyl (8-2), while Olga Khmylev and Kelly Barry defeated Chanel Glasper and Sonia Bokhari (8-4) at No. 2 doubles. The Minutewomen (10-4) picked up the win at No. 3 singles as Arielle Griffin and Jessica Podlofsky held off Heini Salonen and Katya Vasilyev, 8-6. For Swiszcz and Motyl, the result marked just the second loss of the season for the doubles pair and snapped a 10-match win streak. Griffin and Podlofsky extended their win streak to four games and improved to 10-2 this season as a doubles pair. Singles play was all Boston College as the Eagles won each of the six matches in straight sets. Podlofsky battled in a tightly contested No. 4 match-up, but Vasilyev held off the UMass junior in the first set 7-5 and 6-3 in the second set. The Eagles improve to 7-1 on the year with their lone loss coming last weekend at No. 41 Long Beach State. Boston College vs Univ. of Massachusetts
