Women's Tennis Drops Close 4-3 Match To DII No. 15 Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - Despite sweeping the bottom half of singles play, the UMass women's tennis team was unable to top Division II power Barry University on Monday as it fell by a 4-3 final. The Minutewomen notched singles wins from Maude Lecluyse, Lauren MacKay, and Laura Danai to highlight a strong effort. Three of the six singles matches went to three sets with Barry winning two of them. The Buccaneers improves to 10-4 on the season while the Minutewomen fall to 8-7. Barry came out strong by sweeping doubles play to earn the first point of the match. At No. 1 singles, Candynce Boney took the first set, 6-0, but it wasn't enough as Angie Werschel staged an impressive comeback for the 0-6, 6-4, 6-1 win. Lecluyse fought back at No. 4 for her ninth singles win of the season, 2-6, 6-0, 6-2. In her first action at No. 5, MacKay impressed with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Mei-Jing Ang. Danai added a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6. The match of the day came from Tanisha Hodgson who faced Yulia Kashelkina. After Hodgson won the first set, Kashelkina fought back with a 6-1 win, leading up to the deciding third set which Kashelkina won in a tiebreak. The Minutewomen are back in action on Tuesday when they face Florida Atlantic at 1 p.m. Doubles
