Xavier Hands Tennis First A-10 Loss, 4-3

CINCINNATI - Winning four of six singles matches, Xavier defeated the UMass women's tennis team 4-3 on Friday night at the Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club handing the Minutewomen their first Atlantic 10 loss of the season. UMass won the doubles point and a pair of singles matches, but the Musketeers were able to close out two tightly contested matches at No. 3 and No. 5 singles to seal the win. UMass falls to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in Atlantic 10 play, while Xavier improves to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in the league. The Minutewomen will head to Dayton on Saturday afternoon at 3 PM. The entire match was evenly played throughout the evening. The Minutewomen won the doubles point with Yuliana Motyl and Chantal Swiszcz taking the No. 1 spot (8-6) and Jessica Podlofsky and Arielle Griffin winning No. 3 doubles (9-7). Xavier won No. 1 and No. 2 singles in straight sets over Motyl and Bokhari respectively by 6-1, 6-1 scores. Podlofsky fell in her first set at No. 3 singles, but rallied back with a 6-4 win in the second to force a tie-breaker set. Kally Alkire won the tie-breaker 6-1 in what proved the match winning point for Xavier. Griffin and Chanel Glasper won at No. 4 and No. 6 singles respectively, while Swiszcz narrowly fell at No. 5 singles (7-5, 6-4) to Andrea Wolf.
